What is Smart & Skilled

Smart and Skilled offers government-subsidised Vocational Education and Training (VET) to people who meet certain criteria. It’s helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers.

Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.
The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Units of Study

15 units must be completed to attain this qualification, consisting of 9 compulsory units and 6 elective units.

Delivery

This course will be run over 50 weeks and students will be required to attend weekly online classes either during the day 9:30am to 1:30pm or in the evening 5:30-9:30pm. You will also need to attend compulsory face-to-face practical workshops (2 x 3-day workshops) where you will learn, practice and be assessed for the clinical skills included in this course such as manual handling, personal care and first aid. These workshops will be delivered at our Wetherill Park site for Sydney students. For regional students we will attempt to run workshops close to where you are located, but be mindful that this may depend on the region you reside in and the number of students enrolled in your region.
As the course is online you will need access to the following in order to successfully complete this course:

  • A computer with reliable internet access and a web browser
  • Access to Zoom (zoom account)
  • A device to record video. This could be your phone.
    Access to Microsoft Word
  • Basic digital skills

Assessment

Assessment that you will undertake to complete your course may include:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Credit Transfer

You can apply for recognition of prior learning for any learning gained through previous employment or study. You may also apply for any credit transfer on units already completed. Please discuss this further by contacting us on 1300 404 514.
