It aims to familiarise participants with the importance, care and management requirements of a tracheostomy. It aims to provide an understanding of the correct, best practice techniques and methods for tracheostomy care. It also explains the importance of maintaining effective infection control and prevention, as well as the value of privacy, dignity, and respect for the service user.

• Basic understanding of the respiratory system

• Different types of tracheostomy tubes

• Infection control and prevention

• Stoma site care and dressing changes

• Complications of tracheostomy

• Tracheostomy tube tie change

• Suctioning a patient with a tracheostomy 

• Monitoring and reporting abnormal secretions

• Recognising and responding to signs that that airways are obstructed.

• Humidification

• Communication with a tracheostomy
